The government has approved the construction of over 3.18 lakh more affordable houses in urban areas under the PMAY (U), taking the total to 51 lakh units, the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry said today. The latest approval entails an investment of Rs 8,692 crore with central assistance of INR 3,782 crore for 308 projects in six states and Union territories, the ministry said in a release.

Maharashtra has been sanctioned over 2.48 lakh houses, followed by Rajasthan 31,304 houses, Tamil Nadu 23,564, Chhattisgarh 13,889, Puducherry 1,580 and Daman and Diu 203 houses.

The ministry said that with the latest approvals, the cumulative houses being partially funded under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) would be over 51 lakh houses.
